Saiga Antelope
Saiga Antelope is a remarkable species with a history dating back to the Ice Age. Once, they roamed with mammoths and saber-toothed cats. But now, they face serious survival challenges. Disease outbreaks, poaching, and habitat loss are pushing the saiga to the brink of extinction. Let’s explore the history, physical features, behavior, and conservation efforts for this fascinating creature.

Physical Features of the Saiga Antelope
Saiga antelopes are medium-sized mammals. They have a special nose that looks big and round. This nose helps them in many ways. In winter, it warms the cold air before they breathe it in. In summer, it cools the hot air. So, they can live in very tough weather. Their height is about 60 to 80 cm at the shoulder. Also, their weight is between 16 to 28 kilograms. These body features are very useful. They help the saiga survive in places where temperatures change a lot.

Where Do Saiga Antelopes Live?
Saiga antelopes once lived across many parts of Eurasia. But now, they are mostly found in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia. In Mongolia, there is a special type called Saiga tatarica mongolica. This subspecies lives in two protected areas—Sharga and Mankhan. Over time, their range became much smaller. This happened because of hunting and habitat destruction. People hunted them for many years. Also, many grasslands where they lived were destroyed. So, their population dropped a lot. Now, they can only survive in protected areas. That is why they need strong protection and care.
The Threats Facing Saiga Antelopes
Sadly, the saiga antelope faces many dangers. People have hunted them for their special horns. These horns are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Because of this, saiga numbers dropped fast. In the late 1990s, only about 50,000 saigas were left in the wild. They were close to extinction. Then, in 2015, a sudden disease killed 120,000 saigas in Kazakhstan. This showed how weak and unsafe their population is.
But the problems didn’t stop there. Even now, saigas face many threats. Diseases break out again and again. People also destroy the places where they live. On top of that, illegal hunting is still a big problem. So, this beautiful animal is still in great danger.
Saiga Antelope Conservation Efforts
Despite these challenges, conservation efforts are underway to protect the saiga antelope. International treaties, such as the Saiga Antelope Memorandum of Understanding (2006), focus on preserving habitats, regulating hunting, and ensuring the sustainable management of the species. Thanks to these efforts, the population in Kazakhstan has seen significant recovery, reaching an estimated 13.8 million by April 2022.

The Future of the Saiga Antelope A Race Against Time
The saiga antelope is a very special animal. People know it for its strange and amazing look. It also has a long and interesting history. But today, this animal faces many problems. Hunters kill them, and people destroy their homes. So, the number of saigas is getting smaller. We need to do more to help them. We must save both the saiga and the place where it lives. For this, countries must work together. They should also make strong plans to protect the saiga. If we all help, we can keep this animal safe. Then, our children can also see saigas in the future.
